Committed to Enhance Cultural Harmony

Powai Bengali Welfare Association has always been committed to enhance social and cultural harmony through its various initiatives, particularly in the field of art and culture. Cultural undertone is an integral part of every event or celebration of the association.

From its inception, PBWA has organised events that have engaged key performers from the world of song, drama, dance and other art forms that are in the threat of extinction, as well as screening of critically acclaimed movies.

Events of PBWA are always integrated with music or song rendition, poetry or drama that highlights our heritage and represents the works of literary & performing arts pioneers. We have used the medium to recreate the cultural life-line of India as well as bring to light important issues of today’s society. In its constant endeavours to revive art forms from various parts of the country. Chhou dance, a traditional folk form of dance originating from the district of Purulia of West Bengal, Dhamsha Madol, the rhythm from tribal Bengal are some initiatives of the association that have taken shapes in Powai Sarvajanin Durgotsavs.

PBWA Durgotsav is known for staging immensely rich cultural productions performed by both professional performing artists as well as by its in-house talent pool. Throughout the years Powai Sarvajanin Durgotsav has organised shows that are unique in both its form and content. Balmiki Pratibha, Ashoka – hugely acclaimed productions by inmates of correctional homes for Kolkata, musical performances by popular bands like, Fossil, Chandrabindu, Bhoomi and individual artists, like Anajan Dutta, Anupam Roy, Nachiketa, Shubhamita, Shaan, are some of the names that have mesmerised thousands of audiences through their enthralling performances.

Apart from such popular names, the association boasts of the brilliant productions staged by its in-house members. Powai Sarvajanin Durgotsav has an extremely impressive milieu of enriching productions of its own – musicals , dance-drama, drama participated by large number of people, are regular features of a typical pujo evening. Through the in-house productions the association has always tried to present the pathbreaking works of the legends of Bengal.

Alongside the cultural blitz during Durgotsab, PBWA has been delicately crafting cultural events to celebrate key ocassions. Bichitra, our annual cultural event is a humble tribute to commemorate the birth anniversary of Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore, while it also welcomes the change of seasons through Borsha Mongol. Acclaimed plays like King Lear, Don Quixote & Kallu Mama, Phurut and shruti natok by Jagannath & Urimala Basu shines spotlight on realities of modern society and beyond. Heart rendering performances of classical music by Ustad Rashid Khan, melodious sarod of Pandit Tejendra Narayan Mazumdar has set our musical spirits soaring.
