About Project WASH
Water Sanitation & Hygiene
WASH (Water Sanitation & Hygiene) initiative for ZP schools of Talasari taluka, Palghar District, Maharashtra.
A program towards renovating/refurbishing 77 ZP school toilets
Background & thought behind WASH program
WASH and Education: Every child has the right to a quality education, which includes access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services while at school. Children spend a significant portion of their day at school, where WASH services can impact student learning, health, and dignity, particularly for girls. Access to safe water and sanitation has been identified as basic right of every individual by the Sustainable Development Goals 6, which has defined the targets for universal and equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Gender responsive sanitation in vulnerable areas has a specific mention in Target 6.2.
The National Indicator Framework of India under SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all; has also emphasized on the need to “Build and upgrade education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all” (Target 4a), It defines an education facility as one which along with learning infrastructure also includes basic drinking water, single sex basic sanitation facilities and basic hand washing facilities. Thus, ensuring adequate safe water in schools, well maintained sanitation and hand washing facilities and behavior has been identified as a critical part of SDGs and is known as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Schools (WinS) in the Guidelines for Swatchhta Action Plan for schools.
About Talasari: Talasari primarily is tribal taluka with 90.6% population belonging to Scheduled Tribes. The literacy rate of the taluka is around 57%. It is identified by NITI Ayog as one of the aspirational blocks of the country.
PBWA Initiative
Powai Bengali Welfare Association (PBWA) – a registered charitable organization, was formed in 2006 by a motley of passionate Powai-its who shared among themselves the desire not only to make a difference to their immediate neighborhood but also to the society at large by way of impactful social intervention.
Out of the 77 ZP schools PBWA has by the month of June 2024 refurbished/constructed a total of 10 schools toilet blocks, spread over 5 clusters: Zari, Girgaon, Amgaon, Vasa and Talasari, in Talasari taluka with upgraded water and sanitation facilities for 3683 students. A school with good facilities not only instils a sense of comforts (especially girls) amongst the students but these students then become the wings of change and initiate transition to good behavioral and hygiene practices in the wider community.
